A page has no main heading

In the reportMissing H1

missing_h1 · Review item

Short answer

This appears when an indexable page's HTML has no <h1>, or none of its <h1> elements contains any text. An H1 usually names the page's main subject, so a page without one gives readers and search engines one clue fewer. Add an H1 where it names the main visible heading; its absence alone is not proof of a problem.

Severity: Notice. Review it when convenient; a missing H1 is a structure question, not a ranking blocker.

Why it matters

The HTML standard says that a document with headings should have at least one heading of level 1, and a clear main heading helps people and programs see what the page is about.

What to do

  1. Open the page and find its main visible heading; if it is styled text rather than an <h1>, make it an <h1>.
  2. If the page has no main heading, add one that names what the page is about.
  3. Check again with this one address once the change is live.

When to leave it as it is: if the page's design deliberately has no main heading, or the heading is added by a script your visitors run, you can leave it; the check reads the HTML only.

What we read

We read the HTML each page returned, without running JavaScript, and look at every <h1>. A page is reported when there is none, or when none of them has any text; an H1 that holds only an image counts as empty, because alt text is not text.

We check pages that answered 200 with HTML, carry no noindex and either declare no canonical or name themselves as canonical. Pages that are only a frame for scripts, with almost no text of their own, are left out; pages where scripts add part of the content are still checked.

Example & evidence

Illustrative example — one page, not a live audit.

Address: https://bakery.example/rye-bread. The body we read:

<h2>Ingredients</h2>
<h2>Method</h2>
<p>Our rye loaf is baked every morning with stone-ground flour.</p>

There is no <h1>, so the page is reported: Page uses H2 headings without an extracted H1.

A possible correction:

<h1>Rye bread</h1>

An <h1> holding only <img alt="Rye bread"> would still be reported.

Confirm & check again

Check for yourself: view the page source and search for <h1; check that it contains text, not only an image.

Check again: Full audit — Recheck this address. The finding closes when a sufficient check of the same eligible page finds an H1 with text. A page that becomes noindex, names another canonical or is only a shell for scripts does not confirm a fix. A redirect or a non-HTML response alone also does not confirm that the same page's heading condition has been corrected.

Limits & sources

An H1 added by JavaScript is not seen, while an H1 hidden with CSS or aria-hidden still counts if it has text. The check is a structure review, not a ranking or accessibility verdict.

Confidence: Medium because an H1 can be intentionally absent or added only after scripts run.
