A structured-data image is small

In the reportA structured-data image is below the review size threshold

structured_data_image_too_small · Review item

Short answer

This is a review item for a small image in Article or Product markup. Google recommends high-resolution Article images for best results. This check does not prove that a page is ineligible for a rich result.

Severity: Low. Review the image when you next work on the page. The threshold is a recommendation for Article and a conservative audit heuristic for Product.

Why it matters

A larger image can provide a more useful representation of the marked-up content. Google's Article guidance recommends high-resolution images with at least 50,000 pixels in total.

What to do

  1. Look at the original markup, the declared image address and its measured width and height.
  2. Check that the image represents the marked-up article or product. Where a larger image would help, use one with suitable resolution and update the markup.
  3. Run a new full audit after the change is live.

When to leave it as it is: A small product image may be intentional. Review its purpose and quality before replacing it; this audit threshold is not a Google Product requirement.

What we read

We read image declarations in the original structured-data graph for Article and Product, including their accepted schema.org subtypes. An image can be a URL or an ImageObject with contentUrl or url.

We reuse the shared resource collection and validated PNG, GIF, JPEG or WebP header dimensions. This rule reports only a successfully measured image with width multiplied by height below 50,000 pixels.

A complete markup inventory with no eligible image is not applicable. An incomplete inventory, an untyped node, an ambiguous image reference or unavailable image dimensions remains unconfirmed.

Example & evidence

Illustrative example — one Article image and its measured dimensions, not a live audit.

{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "Article",
  "image": "https://bakery.example/images/cake.png"
}

The retained image header records 100 × 100 pixels: 10,000 pixels in total, below the 50,000-pixel review threshold.

A possible correction: choose a relevant larger image and update the declaration. An image measuring 640 × 360 has 230,400 pixels and passes this size check; that alone does not establish rich-result eligibility.

Confirm & check again

Check for yourself: Find the image in the original Article or Product markup, inspect its actual width and height, and multiply them. Review Google's guidance for the marked-up content type.

Check again: Full audit — Run a new full audit. A complete check of the same page can close this item when no eligible measured image is below the threshold, including when fully read markup has no eligible image. Missing or partially read markup and unavailable image dimensions do not prove a fix.

Limits & sources

We do not render images, assess their visual quality or predict a rich result. A valid image header does not prove that the whole file renders correctly.

The 50,000-pixel threshold follows Google's Article recommendation for best results. Applying it to Product is this audit's review heuristic, not a documented Google Product eligibility cutoff.

Known small images can be reported while another image remains unconfirmed; the unconfirmed image still prevents a complete fix comparison.

Confidence: Medium Dimensions come from source-bound image headers. The usefulness of the image and the Product threshold remain review judgments.
