Review stars describe the site’s own organization

In the reportSelf-serving review stars on the site's own Organization/LocalBusiness

Short answer

Check the captured publisher identity and rating or review declaration. Google does not show its review-star feature for an organization’s reviews on its own website.

Severity: Medium. Review rich-result eligibility; this is not proof of a penalty or a ranking loss.

Why it matters

An otherwise valid rating can be ineligible for Google review stars when the reviewed organization controls its own site. The report identifies the captured relationship, not Google’s actual search display.

What to do

  1. Read the original WebSite.publisher link, the resolved publisher and the attached review or aggregateRating in the report.
  2. If this is a review of your own organization, remove its self-referential rating markup. Keep legitimate reviews of products or other organizations.

When to leave it as it is: Leave Product reviews and reviews about third-party organizations. A site name or domain appearing in markup alone does not establish this finding.

What we read

We use the registered site URL and complete, claim-bound JSON-LD, Microdata or RDFa captured on that site. No new page request, JavaScript execution or remote context fetch is made.

A captured WebSite URL must unambiguously match the registered URL and its publisher must resolve to an explicit Organization or LocalBusiness. Empty or contradictory URL declarations do not nominate an owner. Captured name, URL or identifier correspondence supports that graph nomination; name-only or same-host matches do not nominate an owner.

Only attached, resolved Review or AggregateRating declarations count. An explicit itemReviewed must agree with the attached entity. A reverse itemReviewed link must come from a review or rating declaration. An unresolved, contradictory or unsupported attachment remains not checked; switching publisher links does not prove that an unchanged rated entity became a third party.

The report shows bounded original publisher and WebSite markup, up to ten retained review declarations and the actual declaration count. It reads saved evidence without reevaluating the page.

Example & evidence

Illustrative site publisher; this is not a live audit.

{"@context":"https://schema.org","@graph":[{"@type":"WebSite","url":"https://business.example/","publisher":{"@id":"https://business.example/#org"}},{"@type":"Organization","@id":"https://business.example/#org","name":"Example business","url":"https://business.example/","aggregateRating":{"@type":"AggregateRating","ratingValue":4.8,"reviewCount":20}}]}

When the registered site is https://business.example/ and this markup is captured there, the rating describes the site's own declared publisher. A Product rating on the same page is a different case.

Confirm & check again

Check for yourself: Confirm that the reviewed entity is your organization, rather than a product, directory listing or another business. Compare the original relationship and identity evidence before changing the template.

Check again: Full audit — Run another full site audit. A current, sufficiently covered check of the same page must show that the self-referential review markup was removed. Missing captures, unresolved relationships, render-dependent content or unproved identity cannot establish a fix. Complete captured absence of all possible affected rating/review declarations is separate from missing coverage.

Limits & sources

This check currently requires explicit Organization or LocalBusiness types and an unambiguous WebSite.publisher nomination. JSON-LD URL aliases without a directly captured url or full schema.org/url declaration remain not checked. Other organization subtypes without those explicit types, site aliases and indirect ownership are not guessed. Do not change otherwise valid markup merely to satisfy this coverage limitation.

The finding concerns Google review-star eligibility. It does not establish deception, a manual action, ranking impact or whether a rich result was actually displayed.

Confidence: Medium Medium: ownership is an explicit captured graph self-declaration with bounded identity correspondence; the check does not independently certify legal ownership.
